Managing Our Energy
Hello, Dear Ones,
You may have noticed that this note has been absent from your inbox for several weeks. At the beginning of April, I noticed that things weren’t quite right, and I was feeling worn down, numb, and very low energy. I decided to hit pause on some of my creative projects and save my energy for my work directly with clients.
I realized that I was stretching myself too thin, that my energy bank account was pretty out of balance, and that I needed to make some deposits. I’ve always loved this metaphor when thinking about my energy levels, as it provides an excellent visual.
We all have accounts for our finances that need balancing to ensure we don’t overdraft. Our energy is the same. Suppose we aren’t making deposits through restful activities. In that case, we can easily overuse our resources and overdraft our energy account, which leads to burnout and fatigue.
For the past six weeks, I’ve prioritized activities, relationships, and work that energize me and have a high return on investment. I have been doing all kinds of restful activities that breathe new life into me when I prioritize them.
I was still able to provide care to clients during this time because I budgeted the energy I would need to create space for our time together (also, working with clients can so often be a deposit in the energy bank account because it’s meaningful work I feel so much purpose and joy doing!)
I have replenished my energy bank account in time to now embark on some travel adventures that I know will require some energy from me. My challenge to myself on this journey is to ensure that I can maintain awareness of my energy level, and if it is getting low, hold myself accountable for prioritizing activities that feel like deposits.
I know I can be successful with this because I've taken the time to figure out which activities or people expend my energy and what activities and people refresh my energy.
What or who costs you energy, and what or who refills your energy bank account? I wonder, dear reader, how full is your energy account right now?
If you are feeling low or overdrawn, know that you are not alone, and know that you are entitled to rest and rejuvenating activities. If you feel lost on how to begin, please reach out, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to support you in finding ways to feel your best.
Thank you for being here with me and allowing me to be a part of your journey to becoming your best self. I’m here for you, and I see you.
With love and kindness,
Jessica
P.S.
A fun thing I have been doing to care for myself (there’s been a lot!) has been creating time each day to bring awareness to the changing of the season and intentionally noticing the changes in my current environment. I live on the edge of a forest, and spending time each morning with the windows open, hearing the birds chirp, and watching the entire forest come to life has been so inspiring and rejuvenating. What has grown and changed around or within you, dear one?
